The other day a client says to me, “I am sorry but I cheated on you.” I asked, “How did you do that?” Client proceeds to tell me that she went to another fitness facility. She explains how the whole time all she could do is hear in her head me saying things like, “Bend at your knees. Pull in your stomach muscles. Keep your shoulders down.” I told her that it was a good thing that she heard those cues in her head. It’s called your “Fitness Conscience”. She continues to say, “The problem is – I didn’t do any of those things. I cheated.” So I say, “You didn’t cheat on me – you cheated yourself.”
So here is the “down low” on cheating on me. I am your trainer. I give you the tools to workout effectively on your own. I show you how you can modify exercises to accommodate your body. I teach you to be aware of your specific body compensations. I inform you on all the do’s and don’ts that apply to you obtaining your fitness goals. I hold you accountable. I trust you. What I don’t do – I don’t expect you to workout with just me. You can’t cheat on me BUT you can cheat yourself.
Like my client experienced, she had all the knowledge to get an effective workout that would max out her body’s potential and truly make it a challenging class. She knew what to do and chose not to do it. Once you know better and you choose to not do better – then it’s on you, not on me. It isn’t me that you should be apologizing to, it is yourself. I did my job and I did it well because you heard in your head what you should be doing. I can’t control what you choose to do. I can’t make you do better on your own. All I can do is ask you to figure out this answer, “Why didn’t you choose to do what is right?” That is the key question in the equation of cheating.
I want you to be proud of your actions. I want you to feel empowered making choices. I want you to be happy when you look in the mirror. I want you to be at peace when you lay down at night. These are all factors in being healthy and well. That is what I want as a trainer, as a friend, as a partner and as a parent. We all have that little voice that tells us what to do to be healthy and well. It is up to you listen.
