When a client stops working out mid set, there are three reasons I will accept:  1) Chest Pain, 2) Joint Pain 3) Car is Coming – that is it.  I am usually aware of previous injuries so I can prevent further issues from occurring.  During our session I am always asking, “How’s your —?” Fill in the blank: back, neck, ankle, elbow, etc.  If you come to me already feeling unhealthy pain then I put you on a pain scale and check in with you the entire hour.  “Is your pain still a —?”  It’s a numerical scale 1-10 and my objective is to keep it the same or get it to be better.  I am very cautious and careful to NOT re-injure you.  I don’t want to cause you anymore unhealthy pain.  I don’t want to hurt you.

In fact I am the type of person/trainer that wants to make your pain go away.  I want to figure out what makes it worse and what makes it better.  I want to make modifications and adjustments so that you can live an unhealthy pain (UP) – free life.  I think of ways to make UP go away.  That’s how I work but what I forget is that sometimes people would rather live with UP than to do all the work it takes to get rid of it.

In my experience – UP requires a lot of conscious actions to undo the damage. It demands attention to everyday ways to make sure we don’t keep opening the scar.  It is investing in changing  ourselves to prevent the pain from reoccurring.  It is taking responsibility for it.
