I recently started taking Bikram yoga and putting aside the story of the man who started it – I wanted to experience the discipline of this practice. This type of yoga is set at 105 degrees with 40% humidity. The class is 90 minutes, moving through 26 postures in a fixed sequence. The idea of no toweling off, no fidgeting with clothes, no closing eyes was powerful, even no water is part of the practice. You let the sweat drip, the clothes stick, the eyes glued to your reflection in the mirror and if hydrated properly – a person can go 90 minutes without water. This style of yoga isn’t for everyone but the practice of ignoring your distractions so that you can be fully present to focus on your intentions – well that IS for everyone. Write down your intention right now on a small piece of paper and keep it with you throughout the day. The moment you lose sight of your intention – something has distracted you so pull out that piece of paper. Ignore the distraction and focus on your intention.
